Lychnomancy is a form of divination in which the answer to the questions may be found in the flame of a candle. It is closely related to lamp scrying, pyromancy, and other flame-based divination techniques.
The soothsayer studies the movements of the flame in order to foretell the future. In an alternate method, a paper sheet is held over the flame. The diviner then reads the pattern of carbon spots, seeking clues.
Another method involves attracting spirits to the flame. Usually an oil lamp is used, one designed with grotesque forms meant to attract spirits.
A common form uses candle flames to determine the future. Three candles are arranged in a triangle shape. After the question was asked, the candle flames were used to define the answer. If one flame burns higher than the others, the answer is positive. Wavering flames foretell a journey. Should your flame spiral upward, enemies are plotting against you; danger is likewise foretold with an uneven flame. If sparks occur, caution is advised. It is very bad luck indeed if all flames are extinguished at once.
